      INTRODUCTION. Rice is a staple food in China, contributing 40 % to the total calorie intake of Chinese people. With the wide adoption of semi-dwarf varieties, rice yield in China increased from 20 t ha −2 in the s to 35 t ha −2 in the s. Subsequently, hybrid rice that has a yield advantage of 10–20 % over conventional varieties was developed and commercially grown.   Filipino hybrid rice firm SL Agritech Corp. (SLAC) successfully led last planting season a pioneering trial of hybrid rice seed SL-8H, branded “ Shwe Lar-SL-8H” in Myanmar. Also planted were commercial table grade rice SL-7H (Dona Maria Jasponica) on 11 hectares, SL-9H (Miponica) on 28 hectares, and SL-8H on 20 hectares.

    A hybrid is the product of a cross between two genetically distinct rice parents. When the right parents are selected, the hybrid will have both greater vigor and yield than either of the parents. The advantages of hybrid rice are: Increased yields, Increased vigor (which makes them more competitive with weeds), and. of a rice mill that will produce finished product for sale in Myanmar and for export to Singapore.
